Nipple Measuring Guide
Ensuring a proper fit is essential for a comfortable and efficient pumping experience. Every mom is unique, and that’s why we offer a variety of insert sizes to suit different nipple sizes.
Use our nipple size guide below to determine the right size for you. A well-fitting insert/flange ensures optimal milk flow, prevents discomfort, and makes pumping a more enjoyable process.
What is a Flange?
A flange (also called a breast shield) is the part of the breast pump that fits directly over your nipple and areola. It creates the suction necessary for expressing milk. Having the correct flange size is key to making pumping comfortable and effective.
What is an Insert?
An insert is a soft silicone accessory that fits inside the flange to adjust its size. Inserts provide a snug and gentle fit for moms with smaller nipple diameters, ensuring maximum comfort during pumping sessions. They’re an excellent option for achieving a precise fit without needing to switch out the entire flange.
Why Is Fit Important?
- Comfort: The right size prevents pain or irritation while pumping.
- Efficiency: A good fit maximizes milk extraction.
- Breast Health: Prevents issues like clogged ducts or nipple damage.
How to Measure Your Nipple Size
1. Prepare Your Nipple: Measure your nipple diameter at its base when it’s not stretched or compressed. Do not include the areola.
2. Use a Measuring Ruler or Niple Chart: Hold the ruler at a perpendicular angle and line the 0 scale with your nipple base at the same horizontal line, also with the ruler edge meet your areola.
3. Check table: Get the millimeters number between the nipple base and the nipple top and chek the table to know the correrct size.
How to Know If Your Flange Fits Properly
Your nipple should comfortably fit within the flange tunnel without rubbing or pinching. It should snug nicely inside the tunnel of flange. The areola should not be sucked into the tunnel.
Too small
Nipple rubs against the flange tunnel, causing pain or discomfort.
Correct Fit
Nipple moves freely in the tunnel with no rubbing against the sides, and pumping feels comfortable.
Too big
Too much of the areola is drawn into the flange tunnel, which can cause irritation and reduce efficiency.
- Nudies includes a handy nipple ruler with holes in the breast pump set to make measuring a breeze. Please note that your left and right nipples may have different sizes, so please measure them both to get the exact size of them.
- We recommend adding 2-5mm to your nipple measurement to determine your ideal flange size. Because nipple size can fluctuate when pumping, choosing a flange 2-5mm larger often provides a more comfortable fit. For personalized guidance, refer to our flange size chart below.
- Nudies breast pump include a standard 24mm flange and offer additional 27mm flanges for moms with larger nipples. We also provide inserts ranging from 15mm to 21mm to accommodate a variety of nipple sizes.
